basic essential oils

All basic essential oils can be used in various different ways using a combination of oils to create different treatments.

When we say basic essential oils these are oils before they are mixed; for example, lavender, lemongrass, jasmine, ylang ylang and, frankincense to name just a few.

Essential oils can enhance our mind, body and spirit. They are extracted from plants, trees and grasses.

lemon tree

  • Flowers - lavender and rose
  • Fruit - lemon
  • Leaves - eucalyptus
  • Berries - black pepper
  • Barkresin - frankincense
  • Cones - cypress
  • Heartwood - sandalwood
  • Rhizomes - ginger

Now This Will Blow Your Mind !

Some basic essential oils are more expensive than others and, if that has ever puzzled you, then read ahead.

Sixty thousand rose blossoms are required to produce 25g (1oz) of rose oil.

To produce 3 litres of lavender oil you need 100kg of dried lavender flowers.

Musical Notes

You may have heard people talk of top, middle and base notes. This doesn’t mean that aromatherapy oils will suddenly make you burst into song, it’s just a way of describing how long an essential oil’s scent will last.

top, middle and base notes

Base notes - These oils are the longest lasting with scent which can last up to a week. Base notes deepen your blend and draw it into the skin. When you smell a base note it can be faint but when applied to the skin they react strongly.

Middle notes - These oils won’t last as long as base notes, however they will last for two to three days. These oils give body to the blend typically forming the bulk of the blend.

Top notes - These scents only last for around 24 hours. Top notes are really important because they give you a first impression of the blend. They are sharp, penetrating, volatile and extreme.

These are oils which can be used on the skin mixed with a carrier oil or base lotion:
