Whatever your mood, homemade shell candles will enhance your bathing experience setting the scene for contemplation or seduction. The warm glow of flickering flames reflecting in the water can calm, soothe and relax you.
Shell candles are easy to make. Shells collected from the beach make great candle holders. Make sure there are no holes and nothing living in your shells before you clean them.
Homemade shell candles
150g paraffin wax
50g natural beeswax
Double-boiler
Metal-core wick for small candles
Melt the waxes in a double-boiler and remove from the heat. Prime the wicks by soaking 15cm of the length in the wax for 5 minutes. If the wax begins to set, return to the double-boiler before pouring into the shell cases. Leave the wax to set partially and then push the primed wicks into the soft wax. The wick should protrude about 1cm above the wax.
Do not over-fill the shells as they will drip when they are burning.
Place your homemade shell candles in a bowl of sand to keep them from falling over. Use a pretty bowl to add that little extra to your candles.
Instead of adding fragrance to the candles try adding a drop of fragrant oil to the base of the wick as it burns : this allows you to change the scent as you please.
A bathroom is a place to relax and recharge batteries. It’s a sad fact that most bathrooms are small and functional. Unfortunately builders tend to think we want small clinical bathrooms such as hotels have. However a small bathroom does not mean that it can't be your own personal haven.
Your bathroom should be your own personal refuge, a sanctuary where the outside world is locked away and you are soothed with the calming scent of warm water.
The right colour scheme :
Choosing the right colour for your bathroom is important. The colour should reflex your personality and how you best relax. Yellow is warming and reminds you of the sun. Blue is refreshing and reminds you of the ocean. Green reflects the garden and trees and plants outside.
A theme :
You could have fun choosing a theme for your bathroom such as an ocean theme, choosing pictures of boats, surfers, dolphins and waves. Why not choose a seaside theme with buckets and spades, seaside shells, children paddling and homemade shell candles. Only your imagination holds you back.
Lighting :
Lighting should be soft but practical. Mirrors are great in the bathroom reflecting light and making a small bathroom appear larger.
Warm :
Make your bathroom warm with a radiator or a towel rail. Damp towels should always be placed on a heater after use as there is nothing worse than the smell of a damp towel which is left to dry.
Plants :
Plants are a beautiful addition to any bathroom. Even if you are not green fingered there are some really lovely artificial plants in the shops today.
Scent :
Scent is central to our emotions. Scent can remind you of happiness and sadness. Scent does not ask our intelligence as it goes straight to our emotions. Love it or hate it, this is why it’s so important while bathing to choose a fragrance which will help you relax and enjoy the pleasures of the warm water.
Music :
Now you have set the scene with the bathroom of your choice which is warm and inviting, your bath is running and your favourite scent is beckoning you into the water, all that is left is some soft music. Soft music of your choice is a must while bathing. Experiment with ambient sounds, giving atmosphere of ocean waves, the rainforest or garden birds singing softly.

The ancient Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians could teach us one or two things about a relaxing aromatherapy bath.
Pears Soap is one of these products that everyone knows is there and takes for granted that it will always be there : a bit like horlicks, there is something warm and comforting about it.
