Natural Remedy for Stretch Marks

natural remedy for stretch marks Now that summer is here, you may be looking for a natural remedy for stretch marks as they are the last things you want to see when you put on your bikini.

Unfortunately 90% of women get stretch marks at one time or another in their lives whether it's during puberty, pregnancy, hormonal disturbances or simply gaining weight.

Even when the marks have healed, losing their redness, we are left with white fading stretch marks which look just as horrible. Men are not immune to stretch marks either.

Can stretch marks go away? Yes, some stretch marks will go away on their own accord while others may stick around longer. But all is not lost as there are a few natural remedies that can help for stretch marks.

Nobody likes the look of stretch marks and, if you are losing confidence with the problem, a self tan lotion before you go onto the beach may be the answer. However you will need to enrol the help of a friend because there is one area on your back that no matter how you try you just won't be able to reach ! For easy instruction, take a look at our page on applying a self tan.

However, maybe a trip to the beauty salon is the easier option ?

three layers of the skin There are three layers of the skin, the top layer, is the one you can touch, is called the epidermis. The second layer is the dermis which contains blood vessel, nerves, oil glands, elastin and collagen. Subcutaneous layer is the deepest layer and the layer which holds fat cells which protect the body when we bump into something. Stretch marks are caused when the second layer is overstretched and tears perhaps while you are pregnant.

It is difficult to prevent and we are always on the lookout for a natural remedy for stretch marks. It’s completely unrealistic to imagine that at some point we won't have at least one stretch mark somewhere on our body unless you are one of the lucky few and your body has an abundance of elastin and collagen which allows the skin to stretch and bounce back again. Stretch marks are not just found on your stomach, they are also found on the back, especially around the buttocks, breasts, upper legs and arms. If they are new marks they may be red and purple, older fading stretch marks tend to be white and less noticeable.

Below are some butters and oil to help prevent and treat and are a natural remedy for stretch marks.

Oils and butter which may make a difference are :
  • Emu oil - a fantastic stretch mark remedy, helps fading stretch marks and scarring as well as encouraging cells to re-grow. Great for any dry skin.
  • Shea Butter - rich in nourishing vitamins E, A and F, with anti-inflammatory properties and moisturises. Gives good results for prevention and healing red scarring.
  • Cocoa Butter - naturally rich in vitamin E which is one of the best antioxidants for fighting free radicals. A great moisturiser which will keep the skin soft and elastic.
Essential oils are an ancient proven natural remedy for stretch marks :
  • Lavender essential oil - calming and soothing.
  • Neroli essential oil - increases the circulation with a soothing effect on the nervous system.
  • Frankincense essential oil - this oil was like gold in days of old and is especially beneficial for preventing stretch marks and wrinkles.
Remedies which help with the redness and with fading stretch marks :

The easy rub method - rub emu oil, shea butter or cocoa butter onto affected area twice daily.

Essential oil remedy - mix either 1 drop each of lavender, neroli and frankincense essential oil into 10ml of jojoba oil and apply to the affected area twice daily.

The daily bath treatment :

Bath Melts - having a soak in the bath with cocoa butter is a lovely natural remedy for stretch marks
  • 50g cocoa butter
  • 25g part sweet almond oil
  • 2 drops lavender essential oil
  • 1 drop Neroli essential oil
Melt the cocoa butter gently over a pan of boiling water or very slowly (a few seconds at a time) in the microwave. Add the sweet almond oil and mix together. Remove from heat and leave for a few minutes, just enough to allow the mixture to cool down. Add the essential oils and place on a flat tray to cool and set. When the mixture has set, cut into small 1 inch squares. Now run your bath with warm water, allowing the bath melt to dissolve back into a luscious oil.
