Natural Sugar Scrub - It’s only in the last few months that I have started to use a sugar scrub and I can’t understand why I have never used one before.
They are gorgeous to use leaving the skin unbelievably soft. They can be used as a wonderful massage exfoliate or facial exfoliate depending on what oil you mix the sugar with. Brown sugar is my favourite, only because the grains tend to be a fraction bigger than white, and brown sugar has a lovely natural smell. I have sensitive skin so in my opinion brown sugar will always win over white as being the healthier choice. It makes it much more of a natural sugar scrub.

Basic Ingredients for a natural sugar scrub

brown sugar

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup sweet almond oil
  • 5 drops of essential oil
Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl, adding the sugar last and use immediately.

Sweet almond oil is suitable for both face and body and great for dry skin as it nourishes and has anti-inflammatory properties.

The oil you use is your own preference according to your skin type and if you are using it on your face or body. The essential oil is also your own preference depending on your likes and dislikes and your mood.

Vitamin E or honey is a luxury which can be added to your scrub, your skin will love the nourishing properties that they contain.

Shower or Bath

shower or bath

My own opinion is that when you are using a sugar scrub a shower is better because you can rinse your body so much easier than if you are in the bath. However it’s entirely up to you what you prefer.

Wet your body first, cleansing with a shower gel or a gentle soap suitable for your skin type. Apply the sugar scrub to your feet first and using gentle circular movements work your way up your entire body. No need to be to harsh with a sugar scrub. Rinse scrub off and feel the difference in your skin.

Other oils to mix with a natural sugar scrub :

  • Jojoba : this is a luxurious oil being a little more expensive than others. A good oil for all skin types. Anti-inflammatory and nourishing, it is helpful for acne, eczema, psoriasis and allergies.
  • Apricot and Peach : this carrier oil can be used on both the face and the body and is particularly suitable for dry or older skin. Nourishing and soothing for sensitive or inflamed skins.
  • Grapeseed : this is a good carrier oil for body massage although it can be used for facials, but be careful with anyone with sensitive skin or eczema.
  • Wheatgerm : for use on both face and body, however be careful if your skin is sensitive. This carrier oil is good to use on mature and dry skin . Women who are pregnant or with stretch marks may find this a useful oil.
