Removing underarm hair can be sore, especially waxing as the hairs are so strong and if not done properly it can leave bruising.
So why on earth does anyone want to do it?
Would shaving or even hair removal creams not be a better alternative. It would certainly eliminate the pain!
Yes, shaving and hair removal creams are one way to cope with underarm hairs, however they are not a very good way.
By using a razor or cream to underarm hairs you are only cutting off the bit of the hair above skin level that you can see.
This leaves a dark shadow where the hair is still growing in the hair shaft which will grow back very quickly indeed.
Using this method you will have to remove hairs once or twice a week to keep growth at bay.
By waxing your underarms you are pulling the whole hair out of the hair shaft which means no dark shadows and the hairs
will stay away for at least 2-3 weeks if not longer. In fact a much better result all round.
Before waxing under your underarms make sure your hairs are a good length - this means leaving them to grow for at least 4 weeks, if not six.
Waxing hairs which are too short only means that you are leaving hairs behind which are just about to come to the surface of the skin.
Your waxing won't last long and before you know it, you will have hairy armpits again!
Don't wax just before you menstruate as for some reason this is a time when you will feel most pain.
For removing underarm hair by the waxing method you will need :
hot wax - read the instruction
spatula for spreading the wax
paper or cotton wax remover strips
antiseptic
Heat your wax to the manufacturer's instructions.1. You will need to clean off any deodorant - use a product such as tea tree oil which is an antibacterial product :
this will ensure the risk of infection is kept to the minimum.
2. Open the pores up and make waxing a little less painful by using a hot compress just before waxing.
3. Dry the skin thoroughly : some people like to use a little talc just to make the skin extra dry.
4. Spread a thin layer of wax over the skin in the direction the hairs grow.
5. Cover the wax with the remover strip.
6. Press the remover strip into the skin to ensure the wax is sticking to all hairs.
7. The secret to a bruise-free underarm wax is to keep the skin as tight as possible when you pull the wax strip off.
8. Before removing underarm hair raise your arm as high as it will go. This will stretch the skin.
9. Now pull the remover strip as quick as you can in the opposite direction to hair growth.
It's important that you pull in the opposite direction otherwise you will end up removing no hairs at all.
10. Disinfect the area with a cooling agent such as tea tree or antiseptic cream.
After removing underarm hair you must keep the area very clean for at least 24 hours as the hair shaft remains open for a little time after waxing and may get infected.
It's a good idea to use an antiseptic cream, tea tree oil or lavender. Both tea tree and lavender will cool the skin and reduce inflamation and redness.
24 hours after waxing your underarms
don't take a hot bath, saunas, hot tubs or steam rooms as it will feel like a burn
for the same reason, don't sunbathe
don't use fake tan as it may cause infection
avoid tight clothing as they can cause irritation.
