Retinol Side Effects

Are there any retinol side effects worth considering when thinking about beauty and skin care?

What is Retinol?

Retinol is vitamin A which is an antioxidant used in anti wrinkle, anti ageing and mature skincare. (Our homemade carrot face mask below is full of vitamin A.) Retinol can penetrate to the deep layers of the skin where it can help stimulate the cells to produce collagen. Collagen is protein which supports our muscles. As we get older we need a little help in producing collagen which is where retinol comes into play. Collagen helps the skin stay young and healthy by keeping the skin tight and toned.

As we get older we all can do with a little help from retinol to ward off those wrinkles.

Side Effects

Some people say one of retinol side effects is irritation, such as itching, dryness, redness, flaky skin and rashes. You are especially prone if you have sensitive skin. If you do have sensitive skin, as with any new product introduce it very slowly to your skin, just in case you have a nasty reaction. Sun and retinol just don’t go together. Retinol will make your skin extra sensitive to sunlight so you will burn, blister and peel very easily. If you are planning on sunbathing while wearing this product wear a very good sun protector or even better still just don’t sunbathe.

Below is a list of our favourite retinol.
