The wonderful aspect of spray tan is you can enjoy it at any time of the year : winter / spring / summer / autumn, which means that you can look gorgeous, healthy and glowing whenever you want. Maybe you have a night out so you want to look your best, or maybe it's your wedding, or perhaps you just don't want to look the whitest on the beach when you go on holiday.

If you are wanting your tan for a special occasion it is best to have your spray tan at least two days before. For instance if you are getting married on Saturday then have your spray tan on Thursday. This allows for any white patches to be taken care of before your big day it also gives the tan a day to settle, therefore much softer in appearance.

If you have never had a spray tan before, the following will give you a good idea of what to expect.

Before Your Spray Tan
  • exfoliate your body the day before, try our recipe below or have a look at our exfoliating body brush or sugar scrub recipes
  • don't wear any make up, moisturiser or deodorant
  • wear loose dark clothing and flip flops on your feet

Yoghurt and Bran Body Scrub - great for exfoliation

Natural yoghurt is soothing and healing for the skin. The bran and ginger boost circulation and stimulate the area being treated. If you have sensitive skin go easy on the ginger.

  • 5ml live organic plain yoghurt
  • 2tbsp bran
  • 1-2tbsp ginger root, peeled and grated
Mix all ingredients together and apply to the skin with brisk circling strokes.

Spray Tan Information On "When You Arrive At The Salon"

When you arrive at the salon you will be asked to fill out a form which will ask you simple questions relevant to spray tanning, such as "Have you exfoliated in the last 24 hours?", "Have you any make-up on?", "Do you have any respiratory problems ?" (this question is asked because while tanning it can be smelly, and you will inhale a little of the tan, although it will not do you any harm as long as you are healthy). Asthmatics should be aware.

All tanning rooms are different but they all have one thing in common : an airbrush system which is the equipment the therapist will use to apply the tan.

Your therapist will normally instruct you on what clothing to remove, normally she will ask you to remove everything except your underpants. This is a personal choice but if you would rather keep your bra on, tell her, or if you would rather have an all-over tan, ask her if she minds you removing your pants. You may be given disposable flip flops to protect the soles of your feet from colouring or Vaseline may be applied.

You will stand in front of your therapist and she will simply spray you all over with tan. This should only take 5-10 minutes, during which it is a pleasant sensation and you will feel very refreshed. After spraying is finished, you will be asked to stand for a few minutes to dry before dressing.

Spray Tan Information on Developing Your Tan
  • Ideally keep tanning lotion on for at least 8 hours so it can fully develop.
  • Wear loose dark clothing during developing time. Your pyjamas are ideal.
  • Most tanning lotions will wash out of anything except leather so beware if you have a leather sofa/chair. Put a throw-over on them.
  • Don't do anything sweaty while your tan is developing, this includes jogging, going to the gym and sorry, the bad news is, it would really be best to avoid sex at this time!
  • Keep well away from water : here's the good news, you must not wash the dishes.
  • Give yourself a good wash after 8 hours : don't be frightened, remember you need to wash the tanning lotion off which will leave your tan to shine through.

Spray Tan Information on Enjoying Your Tan
  • Moisturise all over your body while you are tanned, as this will help it last longer.
  • If you go swimming remember there is chlorine in the water and this will bleach your tan.
  • It makes sense, the more showers and baths you have the lighter your tan will become.
  • A spray tan will not protect you from the sun, so remember to wear a sun factor cream/lotion when you are sunbathing.
