Vitamins for fingernails are more important than most women realise although having nice fingernails is important to most women. Some people, men and women even pay good money to have them manicured each week. However, did you know having good fingernails starts with the right nutrition? There are some vitamins for fingernails to make them grow and be healthy. I will make a list of some of them below and explain how they help your nails.

Some vitamins for fingernails

Biotin helps the fingernails grow thicker which keeps them from being so easily broken. This is actually part of the B-complex family of vitamins. A deficiency is rare with biotin but if it does happen, can cause more severe problems than just brittle nails.

Keratin

The fingernails are made from keratin, which is a type of protein. Protein is better broken down for use in the system when enough of the B vitamins are present. This means that many of the B vitamins will help the health of the fingernails for this reason. However, these vitamins are best taken together as a B-complex supplement rather than separate. Make sure to include these vitamins for fingernails in your nutrients on a daily basis.

Vitamin A

Another vitamin for fingernails that helps process protein in the body is vitamin A. Deficiency in vitamin A will cause the nails to be not only brittle, but dry too. It can also cause skin problems. So make sure to get enough of this vitamin in your diet.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E can make the texture of your nails smoother and strengthen them. It is an antifungal, antimicrobial and an antibiotic. This vitamin helps to lubricate the whole body including the nails.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C, folic acid and vitamin B12 promotes the production of new protein in the body. Therefore, these help the growth of the nails. Folic acid stimulates the growth of red blood cells. It also helps these blood cells perform their various functions.

Calcium

Calcium is not a vitamin but it is a mineral that is needed for you to have strong and healthy nails. Many times calcium comes with other minerals too. One form of it that is easily digested is coral calcium.

Zinc

Zinc is another mineral that is beneficial for the growth of nails. It is vital for the absorptions of enzymes and other minerals. This is also good for the skin. Fish oil supplements are beneficial for the body. These are great sources for the omega-3-fatty acids. Taking these will improve ridges, rough spots and splits in the fingernails.

Iron

Iron should be included along with all the vitamins for fingernails mentioned here as well as the minerals. A deficiency in this mineral can cause white spots to appear on the fingernails. Of course being low in iron can cause many other health problems including anaemia.

Another way to get many of these vitamins for fingernails, along with other vitamins and minerals is by taking a multivitamin daily. Sometimes you do not need to take any other supplement except maybe some extra calcium. Consult your doctor or a nutritional professional to know exactly what all you might be deficient in that could be keeping your nails from being strong and healthy.
